Shuklaphata National Park
Shuklaphanta National Park is a protected area in the far western region of Nepal. It covers 305 square kilometres and includes open grasslands, forests, riverbeds, and wetlands. The park’s altitudes range from 174 meters to 1,386 meters above sea level.

Initially, it was called the Royal Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve when it was established in 1976. Part of the reserve extends north of the East-West Highway to create a pathway for wildlife migration to the Sivalik Hills. The Syali River marks the eastern boundary, while the international border with India forms the southern and western boundaries of the reserve.
In the past, this area was a favorite hunting ground for Nepal’s ruling class, and it was declared a Royal Hunting Reserve in 1969. Over time, it evolved into the Royal Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, and later, in 2036 BS, it was extended to its present size of 305 square kilometers. The name “Suklaphanta” comes from one of the main grasslands in the park, which is the largest continuous grassland in Nepal, covering about 16 square kilometers.
Within the park’s jungles, there are remains of an ancient kingdom, and some ruins can still be seen today. One notable location is near Rani Tal, a lake in the reserve, where there is a brick belt measuring 1,500 meters in circumference. Locals believe it to be a remnant of the fort of the Tharu king Singhal.
